Below are just a few examples of the many different styles of tansu available. What is more, the modern Japanese furniture owner often puts his or her piece to use in a capacity beyond the original carpenter’s intentions. Tansu make ideal kitchen cabinetry, bathroom vanities, entertainment centers, wet bars and on and on. How you use them is only limited by your imagination, so we encourage you to ‘think outside the tansu!’

Top half of a mizuya (kitchen tansu)

Nicely fits in a media room.  All media components, including wires, are hidden inside the tansu.

Ko-dansu (small chest)

A small Japanese tansu brings a nice accent to a contemporary family room.  Family pictures are displayed on the top and small drawers keep other treasures nearby but of sight.

Bottom half of a mizuya (kitchen tansu)

A fresh idea!  A simple white sink bowl set on top of Japanese tansu carries an Asian decorating theme into a bathroom.

Ranma (transom)

Originally placed horizontally above shoji doors, ranma were decorative as well as serving the practical purpose of allowing both light and fresh air in.  Used vertically here, two matching ranma function as doors.
