This beautifully refurbished piece is from the Late Meiji period (1890's-1910's). The woods used in this tansu are Kiri (Paulownia). The Choba Dansu was used by merchants and was traditionally used in shops to impress customers. This tansu works as a Isho Dansu (Clothing Chest). There are many variations on the Isho Dansu. The typical construction is a two section chest with four drawers and often a smaller lockable compartment with smaller internal drawers. It is refurbished by our skillful carpenters.
