Product Description

This is an antique Japanese tea chest called Cha Tansu.  It was made from Mulberry (Kuwa), Persimmon (Kaki), Cypress (Hinoki) and Camphor (Kusunoki) woods.  The lift-out door features an intricately hand carved Pineapple design which suggests that the previous wealthy owner may have had a special connection to this fruit be it through business channels or possible favorite fruit diet.

Tea chests were traditionally kept in the multi purpose room of a Japanese house.  This room is where guests would relax and the chest would house accoutrements for tea service as well as display seasonal and special occasion decorative items on the open shelves.

The back base shows rare dovetail joinery work while the intricate carving displays Cherry blossom flowers.  There are some splits that have been repaired and due to the hardness of the woods used, some minor natural warping has occurred.
