Product Description

This is an authentic vintage Japanese Tsugaru lacquer table. The design is stunning and the artist incorporated mother-of-pearl within the lacquer technique.

Tsugaru-nuri (lacquer) originated in the northern part of Honshu island some 300 years ago when the clan leader of Tsugaru commissioned a lacquer artist named Gembe Ikeda to be the first to originate this technique.  Requiring up to 50 steps with each step comprised of lacquering, drying, sanding and polishing, the final result creates this one of a kind work of art.  Obviously due to the stunning design pattern when completed, each piece is one of a kind.

Due to its age and previous use there is some lacquer splits and some lacquer coating that is coming off.
