Product Description

This is an older vintage Japanese writing case with a cover designed using two famous Hakone crafts of marquetry (called Yosegi) and inlay (called Zougan).

The technique of the Yosegi geometric pattern was made using solid blocks of elongated wood that were glued and bundled together into a larger block whose end pattern looks identical to the design shown on the box.  Once the glue is dried, the artist would wood plane a layer of the pattern and incorporate it on the exterior of the box cover.

The Zougan inlay depicts an Iris flower and its leaves.  This technique creates pictures and designs using natural wood and though each picture may be nearly identical in look, no two pictures will be exactly alike since they are all hand made.
