Product Description

This is an antique Japanese merchant chest called Choba Tansu from the mid Meiji era (1880's-1890's). It was constructed from Paulownia (Kirinoki) and Cedar (Suginoki) wood. The 2 drawers on the bottom are not made of solid wood. The iron fittings were hand made.

It has a secret compartment space behind drawers. This was the perfect merchant security deterrent for most thieves back in the day.
