Product Description

This is an antique Japanese personal storage chest called Ko Tansu.  It was used to store letters, documents, books and other items for daily use.  It was constructed entirely out of Paulownia (Kirinoki) wood.

The iron metal work was entirely hand made and the use of straight dovetail joinery and hardened wood nails is evident throughout this chest.  It was made in the southern island of Kyushu and its age is from the early Meiji era (circa 1860-1880).

Contemporary uses for this piece include placement on a desk for additional office storage, using this as an elegant side table or placing it next to a bed for the perfect nightstand
