Product Description

This is an antique Japanese merchant writing box called Kake Suzuri Bako. It was out of Zelkova burl (Keyaki) and Paulownia (Kiri) woods and the iron fittings and hardware were hand made.  Most likely used by a wealthy merchant, this box held the inkstone, brushes, paper, paperweight, and money that was used for daily business record keeping.

Its age is from the 1890's to 1900 (mid Meiji era).  *This is the size of box.
