Product Description

This is an antique Japanese merchant chest called Choba Tansu. Constructed from Paulownia (Kiri) and Cypress (Hinoki) woods.

Merchant chests were displayed with pride by the owner of a shop to give customers the impression of success and longevity of the business establishment.  It was almost always situated in a prominent location of the store to catch the view of the client.

This chest features Warabite handles and sliding doors covering an area where business books and records were originally held.

This style of merchant chest is also unusual since there are two top drawers above the book compartment compared to the ubiquitous single drawer.
