Product Description

This is an antique Japanese Kyoto Mizuya tansu. This set stacks in two sections and features voluminous storage and traditional elegance. It is made of Cypress (Hinoki),Cryptomeria (Suginoki) and Zelkova (Keyaki )woods.

Originally used in the Japanese kitchen (Daidokoro), the bottom section held large jars of water for cooking while the upper section stored dishes, cookware, and utensils.

This tansu has become increasingly rare as they are now difficult to find in Japan especially in this fine condition. It features vertical slats on the bottom sliding doors that were made with individual  pieces of Cypress wood rather than wood panels that were carved to look like slats.
